In May 2019 the Hortolympics,"the European Championships in Horticulture Skills" was organised for the first time. Two Wellant-students , Jasper Velleman and Jim Kok, who study Urban Green Development at Wellant Amsterdam, proudly represented the Netherlands.
The students had to compete at 20 tasks: Soil pH and plants, Plant identification, Seed and fruit identification, Putting on a personal protective equipment (plant protection), Plant protection (calculations), Grafting, Scrolling the trimmer filament, Trimming lawn, Guessing weights, Recognizing salad ingredients, Measuring gardening line and scrolling, Determining the circumference of the tree stem, age and height, Robots and programming, Fertilizing (calculations), Planting, Making indoor plant cuttings, Filling a plant growing tray and sowing seeds, Transplanting seedlings, Building an insect hotel, Assembling an irrigating system.
Jasper and Jim excelled at Building an insect hotel (first place) and became second at the tasks Robots and programming and Transplanting seedlings. The Hortolympics were won by Team Estonia. For Jasper and Jim it was a very interesting and rewarding international experience.
